Review: Listen to Me Girls, I am your father episodes 1-6

College student Yūta Segawa is suddenly given custody of his older sister’s three daughters, aged 14, 10, and 3. They’re now stuck living together in a 10 square meter apartment. Meanwhile Raika, the object of his affection, has a fondness of cuteness, and his unexpected arrivals may finally offer an opportunity for them to get together.

Review:

The phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” would be best used to describe the first six episodes of Listen to Me Girls, I am your Father! The picture used in this review would probably give you the impression that this show was full of lolis (okay so two of the girls are lolis), fanservice hijinks, and some good old otaku pandering. In a shocking sense this is not completely true here with episodes 1 thru 6.

What we get here in the first six episodes is focusing on the plot instead of just going head first with otaku jokes and fun sight gags. The big focus on these episodes is going from the world the girls and the Yta live in normally to this brand new world that they suddenly forced into. This is where the series has its biggest strength. While the show could have easily taken the route is focus solely on the hardcore fanbase the show decides to bit a both here and it works would well here. The show features aspects that will please those who enjoy hardcore otaku elements (lolis, moe) in their shows and those that want more focus on plot and less on otaku subjects.

Winter 2012 Anime First Impressions: Papa no Iu wo Kikinasai!

Plot Synopsis: “Yuuta Segawa, a college student, suddenly becomes the guardian of his three nieces in place of his sister and her husband. The eldest niece, Sora, is a 14 year old 10th grader with semi-long brownish hair decorated with a ribbon. The middle niece, Miu, is an elementary schoolgirl with blond pigtails. The youngest niece, Hina, is an angelic 3 year old attending daycare. This at-home romantic comedy illustrates the chaotic but heartwarming lives of these four characters in their tiny one-room apartment.”

First Thoughts: To say that the first episode of this series is generic is like saying water is wet.  Just about everything here is generic and forgettable.  The character designs are cute but forgettable, the music is generic, and the art itself is generic.  The CG is awful and is just so wrong for the series.

As much as it generic there is a certain charm to it that makes me want to keep watching more of it.  Were introduced to the cast and from what I can see, none of the cast members so far being unlikeable.  The voice acting is okay, but is nothing special at all.  There is a little bit of fanservice present in the first episode but nothing that is overly fanserivce.

The first episode of Papa no Ii Wo Kikinasai is generic as you can get, yet there is a certain something to it that makes me still want to watch more of it.  This is not going to be best of the season material but a cute fun show to watch.

Score 2/5

Winter 2012 Anime First Impression: Moretsu Pirates (aka Bodacious Space Pirates)

Plot Synopsis: “Marika Katou is a freshman in high school who lives on the planet “Umi no Akehoshi” somewhere in space. One day, she is told that her father, who she thought was dead, was actually alive until just a while ago, and was the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. And she also finds out that they need her, his heir, to be captain so that they can keep flying! Marika begins a new life as a high school girl, and as captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru!”

Thoughts:  Ever be surprised by a show that has an idea that it should be tongue in cheek but it turns out not to be that way.  Welcome to the first episode of Bodacious Space Pirates.  The first episode gives the viewer’s enough to understand the world that this series is in, without being bogged down with info dumping or long periods of exposition.  The main girl is on the naïve side but she is still a likeable person.  We meet a few of the crew of the Bentenmaru and neither of them are dislikable people.  It is never really explained why the helmsman of the ship is now a substitute teacher at Marika’s school though from what we can tell I would say that he is there to recruiter for the ship.

The show is good looking both with the art in general and the character designs.  CG is used during the show and it great looking.  The music is really good as well.

The real question with Bodacious Space Pirates is this the best show of the season?  I have no idea just yet being with this just being the first episode, but it has all the potential to be the best show of the season.  If things keeping going like they do this could easily be one of the top shows of 2012.

Winter 2012 First Impression: Recorder to Randoseru

Plot Synopsis: “On the surface it seems as if Atsushi is an adult, but really he’s just an elementary student! However, he is paired with a second-year high school student Atsumi, whose height is just the opposite of his. These two together create an unusual relationship and will undoubtedly instigate some comedic antics in this slice of life comedy!”

Thoughts :So let me start this off by asking this question.  What you can say about a three minute long (okay 2:30 if you take out the ending) show?  There is not much at all that can be said here about the first episode of Recorder to Randoseru.  We are introduced to the main characters Atsumi and Atsushi.  With the male lead looking like an adult we a get a joke that is pretty predictable on how it turns out.

It is not a terrible looking series, but it is not going to set the world on fire animation wise.  The character design are okay but like the animation is not going to be neither ground breaking nor be impressive.

Recorder to Randoseru is in short a time killer.  It is going to be best to watch in between shows or if you need something to do.  Those looking for ground breaking shows should look else where.

Anime Review: Deadman Wonderland

It’s been about a month since I actually reviewed anything. I generally avoid watching shows for reviews when the new season is starting up, and after that I was preoccupied with other stuff. I did manage to go back and take a look at a series that originally aired in the spring though. Main reason I even checked this show out was because it’s supposed to be a violent and bloody show, which is something of a guilty pleasure of mine.

Ganta Igarashi has been convicted of a crime that he hasn’t committed, and sent to a new, privately owned and operated prison, where the inmates are forced to provide entertainment for the masses. Ganta finds himself in possession of a power known as the Branches of Sin, which allows him to use his blood as a weapon. Shortly after his arrival at Deadman Wonderland he ends up in Level G, where people with powers like his are forced to fight for the amusement of spectators.

Deadman Wonderland is guilty of one of the most annoying things present in anime lately: not having a proper conclusion so there can be a second season if the first sells well. The last three minutes of the final episode are shockingly similar to the last three minutes of the Sekirei‘s final episode of the first season. The creators put a great deal of effort into showcasing a bunch of potential plotlines and showing characters who were introduced but never really featured so you’ll realize that things aren’t done, so you should go out and buy DVDs and Blu-Rays so they can make more. And like Sekirei, Deadman Wonderland completely lacks any kind of overarching story. You can hardly blame the series for lacking a proper conclusion when there wasn’t really any major conflict going on.
